Edition 01.

The Evolution of Understanding.

AN EDITORS LETTER FROM JUNE GLACKIN

IT HAS TAKEN ME MORE THAN
TWENTY YEARS TO FIND THE WORDS.
NOT BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW
WHAT I DID. BUT BECAUSE I DIDN'T YET UNDERSTAND WHAT HAD ALWAYS BEEN THERE.

For most of my career, I described myself using the language everyone else understood.

Event planner.
Creative.
Designer.
Stylist.
Producer.
Experience expert.

Each title described part of my work. None of them explained its heart.

Only now, after more than two decades of creating weddings, celebrations, brand experiences and life's most meaningful moments, do I realise that my work has never truly begun with design.Or flowers. Or beautiful tables. Or remarkable venues.

It has always begun with understanding.

 q

EVERY EXPERIENCE BEGINS  WITH
understanding.

Understanding people.

Understanding emotion.

Understanding what someone longs to create before they've found the words to explain it themselves.

And perhaps the greatest irony of all...

Is that it took me twenty years to understand that about myself too.

THE THINGS WE DON'T SAY.

People often ask me where ideas come from.

I don't think they come from me at all.

I think they already exist.

Hidden somewhere inside the people sitting opposite me.

Inside their stories.

Their memories.

Their hopes.

Their uncertainty.

My role has never been to tell people what they should want.

It has been to uncover what they already know,
but haven't yet found the confidence or the language to express.

Something clients say to me, that I can never unhear as it's said often

I'D LOVE TO GET INSIDE YOUR HEAD & HEART.

How does it work? How do you create things that I didn't even have the words to say I needed myself?

The truth is...I don't think I create those things. I listen for them.

never just about the event.png

LISTENING DIFFERENTLY.

I've come to believe that listening is one of the most underestimated creative skills there is.

Not simply listening to words.

Listening to pauses.

To excitement.

To hesitation.

To the stories people tell without realising they're telling them.

To the sentence that begins,

"This might sound silly..."

Or...

"I've never told anyone this before..."

When I sit with a couple, I don't only think about how they will feel when they walk into the room. I imagine their guests. Their parents.

The friends who have travelled across continents.

The child who may only remember fragments of the day, yet carry those fragments for the rest of their life.

When I work with a brand, I don't think first about the event.

I think about the customer.

The conversation they'll have on the drive home.

The feeling they'll struggle to describe but won't forget.

Because somewhere in those moments lives the truth.

The experience they're really trying to create.

The feeling they're hoping someone else will leave with.

The memory they're trying to give to another human being.

That's where my work begins.

Not with creativity.

With understanding.

I SEE THE UNSEEN.
I HEAR THE UNSPOKEN.

BEYOND THE EVENT.

For years, I thought I was creating events.

Looking back, I can see I was doing something entirely different.

I was helping people express something they couldn't always articulate themselves.

A daughter wanting her father to feel proud.

A couple wanting every guest to leave believing they had witnessed something deeply personal.

A business hoping customers would feel inspired rather than sold to.

A family wanting everyone around the table to feel as though they belonged.

THE EVENT WAS NEVER
THE DESTINATION.

It was simply the language through which those feelings were expressed.

 q

MY WORK IS PEOPLE.

always people.

Because every experience tells two stories.

The first belongs to the person who entrusts me with their vision.

The second belongs to every life that experience touches afterwards.

That second story matters just as much as the first.

People often ask whether I specialise in weddings.

Or luxury events.

Or brand experiences.

The answer is...

Yes. And no.

Because whilst those are the environments I work within, they are not the work itself.

When I sit with a couple, I don't only think about how they will feel when they walk into the room. I imagine their guests. Their parents.

The friends who have travelled across continents.

The child who may only remember fragments of the day, yet carry those fragments for the rest of their life.

When I work with a business or a brand, I think about my client and the people they are creating the experience for.

What matters to both.

What needs to be understood.

What they want people to feel whilst they're there.

And what they hope will stay with them long after they've left.

WHAT TRULY MATTERS.

Somewhere along the way, three values quietly became the foundation of everything I do.

Not because I wrote them on a wall.

Because they revealed themselves through the work.

Design.
Detail.
Discretion.
Discretion.jpg

THE QUIETEST KIND OF LUXURY.

Discretion.

We live in a world that encourages us to become louder.

To build personal brands.

To share every success.

To make ourselves visible.

Perhaps the value I cherish most.

Yet I have never believed my role was to be remembered.

My role is to create moments in which other people become unforgettable.

There is something quietly beautiful about standing behind extraordinary experiences rather than in front of them.

IN A WORLD WHERE SO
MANY FEEL THEY NEED TO SCREAM AND SHOUT
TO BE SEEN AND HEARD...

I am proud to be discreet.

To only be seen, heard and felt in the worlds,
rooms and homes of those that matter.

If I have done my work well...

The memories belong entirely to the people living them.

Not the person who orchestrated them.

People sometimes ask what success looks like to me.

It isn't recognition.

It isn't awards.

It isn't applause.

A DIFFERENT MEASURE OF SUCCESS.

IT'S RECEIVING A MESSAGE YEARS LATER SAYING...

Every time we gather as a family,
we still talk about that day.

Or hearing someone tell me...

I honestly don't think I'd still be running my business if it wasn't for your support.

Not because I organised an event.

Because I believed in them.

Because I listened.

Because I helped them discover something they couldn't yet see for themselves.

That is a privilege beyond measure.

Looking back now, I realise something else.

For twenty years I have been helping other people find the words they couldn't yet say.

Perhaps this Journal exists because, finally...

I'VE FOUND MINE.

A PLACE AND SPACE
FOR WHAT I'VE SEEN,
FELT AND LEARNT.

JP | THE JOURNAL
IS NOT A PORTFOLIO.

It is not a collection of projects.

It is not a catalogue of beautiful things.

It is an exploration of understanding.

Gathering.  Design.
Entertaining. Celebration.  Emotion.  Togetherness.

Of why we gather. How we connect. What we remember.

Of the extraordinary privilege of creating moments that help people feel seen, welcomed and remembered.

This is where I will share what more than twenty years of creating, experiencing and watching people connect has taught me.

The details most never notice.
The places that leave a mark.
The rituals worth preserving.
The ideas that continue to shape the way I think.

Because I believe every extraordinary experience has something to teach us.

If only we're willing to pay attention.

It has taken me more than twenty years to understand what my work has always been.

Then I'd make the next sequence a typographic moment, rather than ordinary body copy:

Not events.

Not weddings.

Not design.

understanding
Everything else grows from there.

So if there is one thought I hope you carry with you from here, let it be this.

I don't just design experiences.
I understand people.

Because when people feel understood...

Everything else becomes possible.
